Jumbled Opinions on Living, Democracy, and Making Things

Seasonal Changes Underway

As usual seasonal changes are underway. When I started the quest to figure out how to create sustainable cohousing, I discovered that “sustainable” meant irreversibly “green.” “Sustainable energy” in “sustainable homes.” So I transitioned to using the word “affordable,” all the while protesting that the word “affordable” was not the right word. The government has taken it over and defined it as “affordable to some,” as in only half the population. The middle to high middle. The half that pretty much already has housing. And whose lives are thus controlled by debt. They are the upstanding citizens, the house-poor.

And cohousing — collaborative housing, the new neighborhood — began with believing it could be much less expensive than conventional housing and make itself available to all.

The problem is housing that is obtainable for the bottom 50% of the population.
